The takeaway at the end of the app demos—which made up a tremendous chunk of this keynote—is that Microsoft knows how important apps are for Windows Phone 7, or more importantly, how instrumental the lack of decent apps was in the decline of Windows Mobile 6. This hands-on lab introduces you to the tools and procedures required to build and test Silverlight for Windows Phone applications. It shows the fundamentals of developing Windows Phone applications by walking you through the development of a simple puzzle game and goes through the different stages of starting a new project, adding controls and code behind, and testing and debugging.

The lab covers several key features of the Windows Phone platform including navigation, multi-touch, and isolated storage. The audience for this lab is developers who are less familiar with Microsoft tools, such as Visual Studio, and are relatively new to Silverlight.

If you are comfortable with the Silverlight programming model and already work with Visual Studio and the Microsoft Expression suite, you may consider skipping this lab. These tools are all you need to create and test any managed Windows Phone application. For convenience, much of the code used in this hands-on lab is available as Visual Studio code snippets. To check the prerequisites of the lab and install the code snippets:.

Run the SetupLab. Once you have verified every prerequisite, follow the instructions to install the code snippets. With code snippets, you have all the code you need at your fingertips. The lab document will tell you exactly when you can use them. For example, Figure 1 Using Visual Studio code snippets to insert code into your project.

To add this code snippet in Visual Studio, you simply place the cursor where you would like the code to be inserted, start typing the snippet name without spaces or hyphens , watch as IntelliSense picks up the snippet name, and then press the Tab key twice when the snippet you want is selected.

The code will be inserted at the cursor location. Figure 2 Start typing the snippet name. Creating the Puzzle Board in Visual Studio 3. Silverlight Sudoku It acts just like I am expecting this app to on the new OS fro watching as many videos of 7 Series as possible and I enjoyed the effects.

I have been concerned that the effects could get in the way of just trying to achieve something on the device but if the effects will be like this then I have no worries; it appears that the folks over at wmpoweruser. I am into things looking right, something that certainly can never be said for Windows Mobile!

The creator of this Silverlight has provided lots of information for anyone interested in how he did it, beware non-devs. It is being reported that Windows Phone 7 Series will not support cut and paste when released, this is very bad news and puts a serious doubt in my mind about what else might be lacking from what I thought was going to be a great mobile OS. I knew there would sacrifices to make with the launch of a brand new operating system however there are some things that must, must, be in the new OS from day one and cut and paste is one of them.

My hope is that with months still to go before 7 Series is released we, the social Microsoft community, can start a campaign using social media to get Microsoft to include a clipboard feature within the OS. To get this campaign rolling I am asking you to include the hash tag WP7SCutPaste within your tweets; so spread the word and lets pressure Microsoft and its 7 Series devs into including the feature!

So I was told that Windows Phone copy and paste is not definitely, but that they were looking at adding this before RTM. Now that sounds more optimistic, but I shall continue to push for copy and paste until Microsoft confirm it will be in the OS.

Now that MIX10 is over I thought I would share with some of my views about what was announced at the show as there seems to be some odd ideas, misinformation and bad news. Windows Phone 7 Series. No Multitasking — I am not bothered in the slightest about the multitasking aspect of 7 Series, other than being able to play music in the background I struggle to think of an app I would need access to when using another app.

I also think that the Marketplace will encourage a higher level of innovation and design in apps for 7 Series, most of the current apps on Windows Mobile are absolutely disgusting why I have so few apps on my HD2 and I for one look forward to a more unified approach to apps.

However, and its a big however, Microsoft are including Office in 7 Series and that is definitely an app will will benefit from cut, copy and paste.

Have we be given a time scale for when this feature is going to be added to the phone? Maybe if Microsoft gave us that piece of information I would be reassured, but we could be waiting months whilst the iPhone users will be laughing at us 7 Series users, how the mighty will have fallen and the tables turned.

I was browsing DeviantArt this morning and stumbled across these images of an interface for Rainmeter, suffice to say I have found a reason to use rainmeter.
