Remember me. We should be embracing people from all walk of life and all ethnic origins to provide us with the creative thinking needed by the industry. Having a diverse workforce in the complicated area of cybersecurity will help us to take on the ever-changing set of challenges this area of our lives presents.
The challenges experienced by those from a minority group in cybersecurity are felt most keenly in the areas of bias and discrimination, and the feeling of being disenfranchised. Discrimination and bias : The ethnic minority gap in the tech industry has been shown to be widening. The same was found for black men and women. Discrimination and bias is not only preventing people entering the profession, but is also behind an exodus as shown next.
There are a number of ways that an organization can redress the balance pitted against ethnic minorities in the workplace and in cyber security these include:. Cybersecurity continues to challenge the best of us. The tricks and techniques employed by cybercriminals are themselves diverse and complex; they straddle the divide between technology and human factors.
Having a workforce that pulls together multiple talents, experiences, and skills from across different cultures will help to build a more creative problem-solving approach to managing the cybersecurity problems we face. InfoSec Institute just launched a new cybersecurity scholarship program to help close the growing cybersecurity skills gap and encourage new talent to join the industry. Scholarships target underrepresented groups in cybersecurity including women and minorities , and include certification exam vouchers to give recipients the skills, credentials and experience needed to secure a professional-level cybersecurity position.
Technology can positively impact how we securely manage entities, devices, and the internet of things when in the right hands. Digital identities are seen as a way to tackle inequality and provide inclusive access to the modern digital economy. If you dare to look at the bigger picture, digital identity is not all about you.
Despite the overwhelming positives that digital identity can bring to the world, this technology can take a sinister turn in the wrong hands. When linking a digital identity to a health passport, It could provide some governments with a green light for tyranny. However, long before COVID vaccines and domestic passports, the inconvenient truth is that every click, like, swipe and selfie, has always been tracked. These digital footprints helped tech companies personalize content and give you more of what you want to keep you staring at a screen and endlessly scrolling in search of your next dopamine hit.
If you dared to look away from the screen, traditional media might advise you to question nothing and avoid critical thinking. We are now beginning to explore digital identity in ways that would have been unthinkable just twelve months ago. When the COVID nightmare is over, will domestic passports and scanning of QR codes eventually be linked to a social credit system that rewards good citizens for a zero-carbon lifestyle?
Whether that sounds like progress or dystopia will depend entirely on your worldview. Where will our trail of digital footprints lead to in five years from now? Most people are happy when they believe they have control over their actions and exercise free will. But could the smorgasbord of data we are creating and the media we consume create an illusion of choice?
The problem is only getting worse as the Internet of Things continues its rapid expansion. When refrigerators, automobiles, smartphones, and just about every object in daily life are all equipped with communications capabilities, it will be impossible to execute a privacy framework in which consumers can examine all the possible data uses before information is collected.
It is a fake mechanism of autonomy, offering no real consumer protection. There is an alternative.
